Alexandra Eala produced the biggest result of her young career at Wimbledon, beating the defending champion Iga Swiatek 7-6, 6-2 in the third round to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time. In doing so, the 21-year-old became the first player from the Philippines, man or woman, to reach the second week of a major in the Open era.
A statement win on the grass
Eala edged a tight opening set on a tie-break before pulling clear in the second, closing out the match in straight sets, Olympics.com reported. The result ended the title defense of Swiatek, one of the most successful players of her generation, and confirmed that Eala's rise is reaching the sport's highest level.
It was Eala's second career win over Swiatek, having beaten her during a breakout run at the Miami Open in 2025.
"For all the little girls"
Visibly emotional afterward, Eala framed the win around the young players watching at home. She dedicated it to "all the little girls with ruffled socks and chubby cheeks," recalling her own childhood going to training as a girl in the Philippines, as the WTA reported. In a country where tennis has long trailed basketball and volleyball in popularity, her run has drawn unusual attention back home.
From Manila to the Nadal Academy
Eala began playing as a child in the Philippines before moving to Spain in her early teens to train at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca. As a junior she won the US Open girls' singles title in 2022, the first Filipino to claim a junior major, and she has since climbed into the upper reaches of the WTA rankings to become the highest-ranked Filipino player in the tour's history.
Next up
Eala's reward is a fourth-round meeting with Jasmine Paolini, the Italian who reached the Wimbledon final in 2024. Whatever happens next, her performance against Swiatek has already made this her deepest run at a major and a landmark for Philippine tennis.
