# Wildfires force thousands to flee in southern France amid summer heat

Wildfires broke out across parts of southern France this week, forcing the evacuation of more than 3,000 people — many of them holidaymakers at Mediterranean campsites — as hot, dry and windy conditions fueled the flames. Firefighters backed by water-bombing aircraft brought some blazes under control, but authorities warned the danger was not over.

Southern France was battling a rash of wildfires this week, with more than 3,000 people ordered to leave their homes and holiday campsites as flames spread through tinder-dry countryside during a spell of intense summer heat.

## Where the fires struck

Several blazes broke out across the south on July 1 and 2, with a number of departments placed on the highest level of fire alert. The largest evacuation came in Fréjus, on the Var coast, where more than 2,000 residents and holidaymakers were moved from campsites as a fire approached, [Connexion France reported](https://www.connexionfrance.com/news/thousands-evacuated-across-southern-france-as-wildfires-near-homes/800087). Further west, hundreds more were evacuated from areas north of Marseille and in the Aude region, [as RTÉ reported](https://www.rte.ie/news/europe/2026/0702/1581348-france-wildfire/).

In all, authorities said the fires had burned well over 1,000 hectares (more than 2,500 acres) of vegetation. No deaths or serious injuries had been reported by authorities, though figures in a fast-moving emergency can change.

## A large response

France mobilized a substantial firefighting effort. Hundreds of firefighters, backed by dozens of vehicles and water-bombing Canadair aircraft, were deployed to tackle the flames. The main fire near Fréjus was reported to have been brought under control by the evening, but officials cautioned that other blazes remained active and that the overall situation was still dangerous.

One local official captured the uncertainty, describing a fire as "contained at times" but "not under control" — a reminder of how quickly wind and heat can reignite or spread a blaze that appears to be easing.

## Why the risk is so high

The fires took hold in classic wildfire conditions: high temperatures, dry vegetation left brittle by drought, and gusty winds that carry embers and push flames across the landscape. Southern France, with its Mediterranean scrub and forests, is especially prone to summer fires, and this outbreak came amid the wider heat that has gripped much of Europe this season.

Scientists have repeatedly linked the growing intensity and frequency of such fires across the Mediterranean to a warming climate, which lengthens fire seasons and dries out the fuel that feeds them. Whatever the cause of any individual blaze — many are sparked by human activity, accidental or deliberate — the conditions that turn a spark into a major fire have been becoming more common.

## What happens next

For now, the immediate concern is containment and the safety of those displaced. Evacuees from campsites and homes were moved to safety while crews worked to stop the fires reaching more built-up areas. Much depends on the weather: cooler, calmer conditions would help firefighters gain the upper hand, while continued heat and wind would keep the threat alive.

The episode is an early and forceful reminder of what a hot Mediterranean summer can bring. With the season far from over, French authorities — like their counterparts across southern Europe — face weeks in which a single day of extreme heat and wind can turn dry hills into a fast-moving emergency.
