## Deadly landslides in Mindanao

The worst of the casualties came in two separate landslides. Ten people were killed when a slope gave way early on Friday at Malapatan, in Sarangani province, and at least five more died in a landslide in Lanao del Sur province, according to Philippine disaster officials cited in reporting on the disaster, [PhilStar Life reported](https://philstarlife.com/news-and-views/597633-landslides-kill-15-in-mindanao-as-biggest-typhoon-in-decades-nears-taiwan). Several people were reported missing, and rescue teams were searching the debris. Days of heavy rain had saturated hillsides across the region, and while the center of the storm was passing to the north, its outer bands were enough to bring the ground down.

## A storm of unusual size

Bavi is being described by forecasters as one of the largest and strongest typhoons to threaten the area in many years, with an unusually wide wind field. Meteorologists in Taiwan said its reach would make it the biggest typhoon to affect the island in more than three decades. Storms of this scale are dangerous not only for their peak winds but for the sheer volume of rain they carry, which can overwhelm rivers and destabilize slopes far from the eye.

## The region braces

Taiwan appeared to face the most immediate threat, with the storm forecast to bring torrential rain and high winds to its northern and eastern areas over the weekend. More than 2,000 people had been evacuated, many from the mountainous eastern county of Hualien, where officials were closely watching barrier lakes formed by earlier landslides, and schools and some workplaces were closed. Japan's weather agency warned of violent winds and intense rain around its southern islands, while in China authorities prepared for the storm to make landfall along the southeastern coast and moved large numbers of people out of its expected path.

## What to watch

The danger from a storm like Bavi unfolds over days, not hours, and shifts as it moves. In the Philippines the immediate concern is further landslides and flooding from rain already fallen; along its onward track, the risks move with it, from Taiwan's mountains to Japan's islands and China's coast. Casualty figures in fast-moving disasters are provisional and can change as access improves and searches continue. For now, the confirmed toll stands at 15, all in Mindanao, with the region watching an outsized storm still gathering itself over open water.
