# Twins and Phillies Reveal Their Field of Dreams Uniforms

Major League Baseball returns to the Iowa cornfield of the 1989 film for a third time on August 13, with the Minnesota Twins facing the Philadelphia Phillies. Both teams have unveiled kits that reach back into their own histories for the occasion.

The Minnesota Twins and the Philadelphia Phillies will play in Dyersville, Iowa, on August 13, and both clubs have now [shown the uniforms they will wear](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49406196/minnesota-twins-philadelphia-phillies-field-dreams). For a game built entirely on nostalgia, the kits are the point as much as the result.

## What the Field of Dreams game is

For readers who do not follow American baseball, a short explanation is owed, because the event makes no sense without the film.

*Field of Dreams*, released in 1989, is about an Iowa farmer who hears a voice telling him that if he builds a baseball diamond in his corn, something will come of it. He ploughs under part of his crop and builds it. The film became one of the enduring pieces of American baseball sentiment, and the diamond built for it, in a real cornfield near Dyersville, still stands.

Major League Baseball began staging regular-season games beside that site, in a purpose-built ballpark ringed by working corn, as a piece of stagecraft: the sport playing on its own myth. This is the third such game. The first, in 2021, saw the Chicago White Sox beat the New York Yankees in a 9-8 game. The second, in 2022, was between the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago Cubs.

## What the Twins will wear

Minnesota's kit is all-white with navy pinstripes and a navy "Twins" wordmark trimmed in red across the front, the tail of the 's' curling under the name. The navy cap carries the club's interlocking monogram, a white "T" and a red "C," for the Twin Cities the team represents.

The detail that carries the history is on the sleeve: a patch bearing "Minnie and Paul," a logo created in 1961 and worn on Minnesota's uniforms from 1961 to 1986. It is two cartoon players, one from Minneapolis and one from St Paul, shaking hands across the Mississippi. Reviving it is the whole idea in miniature, a team wearing its own founding-era emblem in a setting designed to evoke the past.

## What the Phillies will wear

Philadelphia has gone further back still. Their kit for the game is grey, drawn from the road uniforms the club wore between 1939 and 1941, with a slanted red "Phillies" script outlined in navy and a navy cap carrying a bold red "P."

Their sleeve patch reproduces what the team wore in 1939, a design that marked what was then believed to be baseball's centennial. The belief was mistaken: the neat story of the sport's invention in 1839 has long since been dismantled by historians, and its origins are older and messier than the centennial celebrations assumed. The patch, then, commemorates an anniversary that was itself a myth, which is oddly fitting for a game staged on the set of a film about believing in one.

## Why this works

The Field of Dreams game is not a serious sporting fixture in the sense of deciding anything large. It is a single regular-season game that happens to be played in a cornfield.

What it sells, and sells well, is continuity: the idea that the sport being played now is the same one that was played a century ago, in the same country, by people who felt the same way about it. The uniforms are the mechanism. Both clubs have reached past their modern identities to a specific earlier one, so that for one evening the game looks like its own memory of itself.

That is a small thing to engineer and a hard thing to fake, which is why the choice of exactly which old uniform to wear is treated with the care it is.
