# The UN says 200,000 more people have been displaced in Sudan's Kordofan

Intensified fighting has driven at least 200,000 people from their homes in the Kordofan region since late last year, the United Nations says. Across Sudan, a war that began in 2023 has killed at least 59,000 people and displaced some 14 million.

At least 200,000 people have been displaced in Sudan's Kordofan region since late last year by intensified fighting, the United Nations says, [in figures reported by Al Jazeera](https://www.aljazeera.com/video/newsfeed/2026/8/22/more-than-200000-newly-displaced-in-sudans-kordofan-region).

The war that began in 2023 has killed at least 59,000 people across the country and forced some 14 million from their homes.

## This is a short story and here is why

The source for the Kordofan figure is a video caption of three sentences. It gives the number, the region, the period, the attribution to the UN, and the cause as intensified fighting. It gives nothing else.

It does not name the states or towns within Kordofan where people have fled from, or where they have fled to. It does not name the parties whose fighting caused the displacement. It does not say which UN agency produced the figure or on what date, quotes no official, and describes no conditions for the people affected.

We are running it anyway, at this length, because the number is large and attributed and readers are entitled to know it. We are not going to dress it in detail we do not have, and everything above this paragraph is the whole of what we can stand behind.

## What the numbers mean without the detail

Two things can be said about the scale that do not require additional sourcing.

The first is arithmetic. Fourteen million displaced from a pre-war population conventionally put in the mid-forty millions makes Sudan's the largest displacement crisis in the world by some distance, and the 200,000 in Kordofan is an increment on top of that, not part of it.

The second is about where. Kordofan sits between Darfur in the west and the Nile valley in the east, which has made it a corridor rather than a destination through much of this war. Displacement into and through a corridor region is difficult to count, difficult to reach with aid, and prone to happening more than once to the same people.

## What we are not saying

Sudan's war is fought between named parties, each of which has been accused of grave conduct and each of which disputes the accusations. The report we read attributes the fighting to nobody in particular, and neither will we.

We would want, before writing at greater length: the UN agency and the date of its assessment, the localities involved, the destinations, and any account from people who have moved. When any of that becomes available to us, we will return to it.
