# Super Typhoon Bavi Makes Landfall on US Pacific Islands

Super Typhoon Bavi, a Category 5 storm, made landfall on Monday over Rota in the US Northern Mariana Islands, near Guam, with extreme winds that the National Weather Service warned posed an imminent danger to life. Widespread power outages and structural damage have been reported, though there was no confirmed word on casualties.

One of the most powerful storms on the planet this year has struck US territory in the western Pacific. Super Typhoon Bavi made landfall on Monday over the island of Rota, in the Northern Mariana Islands just north of Guam, battering the region with extreme winds, torrential rain and dangerous seas.

## A Category 5 landfall

Bavi came ashore as a Category 5-equivalent super typhoon, with maximum sustained winds around 180 mph and even higher gusts, [as CBS News reported](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/super-typhoon-bavi-rota-guam-extreme-wind-warning/). The National Weather Service in Guam described the storm as posing an "imminent danger to life," warning residents to stay away from windows because flying debris could be lethal and that utility poles and power lines would be brought down.

Rota, a small island of a few thousand people, took a direct hit from the eyewall, the ring of the strongest winds surrounding the calm eye. On nearby Saipan, the largest island in the chain, the international airport recorded wind gusts of more than 100 mph as the storm moved through, [according to reporting on the storm](https://www.npr.org/2026/07/05/g-s1-132052/guam-pacific-islands-brace-super-typhoon-bavi).

## Damage and disruption

Authorities and forecasters warned of severe destruction. Weaker homes, particularly those with metal roofs, were expected to be destroyed, and even sturdier buildings to suffer major damage. Power outages have been reported across the islands, with officials cautioning that electricity and other services could be disrupted for an extended period as crews deal with downed lines and blocked roads.

Bavi also brought heavy rainfall, with a foot or more possible in places, raising the risk of flash flooding and landslides, and coastal areas faced life-threatening inundation and huge waves. Forecasters had warned of surf and swells that could reach around 35 feet near the storm's center.

## A region already battered

The typhoon lands on a region still recovering from disaster. The Northern Mariana Islands were hit only months ago by another powerful storm, Typhoon Sinlaku, in April, which caused extensive damage. Coming so soon after, Bavi compounds the strain on communities and infrastructure that had not yet fully rebuilt.

## What comes next

As of the latest reports, there was no confirmed information on deaths or injuries, with attention focused on riding out the storm and, once conditions allow, on search, rescue and damage assessment. Emergency shelters had been opened on Guam for residents in vulnerable housing before the storm arrived. Officials urged people to stay sheltered until the all-clear, warning that the danger would not pass immediately even after the strongest winds had moved on. A fuller picture of the damage, and of any human toll, is likely to emerge only once the storm clears and crews can reach the worst-hit areas.
