# Super Typhoon Bavi Forces Evacuations as It Bears Down on Guam

Super Typhoon Bavi, a Category 5 storm with sustained winds around 165 mph, is closing on the US territory of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, with forecasters warning of catastrophic winds, flooding and storm surge. Authorities have declared states of emergency, opened shelters and urged residents to prepare before the storm's closest approach on Monday.

A powerful super typhoon is bearing down on the western Pacific islands of Guam and the Northern Marianas, and forecasters are warning residents to brace for some of the most dangerous conditions the region has faced in years. The storm, named Bavi, reached the top of the intensity scale over the weekend and is expected to make its closest pass early in the coming week.

## A Category 5 storm

Bavi strengthened into a Category 5-equivalent typhoon on July 4, with maximum sustained winds of around 165 mph, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, and higher gusts near its center. It is the third storm to reach Category 5 strength in the western Pacific this year, [Yale Climate Connections reported](https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2026/07/super-typhoon-bavi-becomes-the-3rd-cat-5-of-2026/). The National Weather Service in Guam warned that "whoever is closest to the center" would face catastrophic conditions.

Forecasters expect the storm to track past Rota and thread between Guam and Saipan, with the closest approach to Guam anticipated on Monday. The exact path remains uncertain, however, and officials cautioned that any of the populated islands in the chain could take a direct hit.

## Warnings and shelters

Typhoon warnings are in force for Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan. Guam was placed in an elevated readiness condition over the weekend, restricting movement and activating emergency protocols, and authorities opened evacuation shelters in schools for residents in flimsy or low-lying homes, [The Guam Daily Post reported](https://www.postguam.com/news/local/super-typhoon-bavi-strengthens-to-category-5-track-edges-closer-to-rota/article_1b87662b-0924-4d54-b519-47516d2171c8.html). Both Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands declared states of emergency, and US federal agencies said they had pre-positioned water, meals, cots and generators to support the response.

The preparations abruptly displaced Fourth of July plans across the islands, as communities shifted from holiday celebrations to boarding up homes and stocking supplies.

## Expected impacts

The National Weather Service forecast torrential rainfall of a foot or more across parts of the island chain, raising the risk of flash flooding and landslides on higher ground. Coastal areas face the greatest danger: forecasters warned of large, destructive surf and life-threatening coastal inundation that could reach well over 10 feet near the storm's center, along with severe beach erosion.

Because Bavi had not made landfall as of the latest advisories, the ultimate toll will depend heavily on its final track and how much it weakens, if at all, before it arrives. For now, officials across Guam and the Marianas are urging residents to finish preparations and move to safety while conditions remain calm, warning that the window to do so is closing quickly.
