# Sam Neill, Jurassic Park Star and Beloved New Zealand Actor, Dies at 78

Sam Neill, the New Zealand actor whose easy warmth and understated authority made him a fixture of world cinema for four decades, from the paleontologist of Jurassic Park to the tormented husband of The Piano, has died at 78. Tributes have poured in from the many collaborators who called him a friend.

Sam Neill, one of the most quietly durable actors of his generation, whose forty-year career ranged from Hollywood blockbusters to the arthouse and who was as content among the vines of his New Zealand winery as on a film set, died on July 13 in Sydney, aged 78. His family announced the death, [as NPR reported](https://www.npr.org/2026/07/13/nx-s1-5891505/actor-sam-neill-dies). He had been treated since 2022 for a form of blood cancer, angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, and had said only months earlier that he was in remission.

## The role the world knew him for

To a global audience, Neill was Dr. Alan Grant, the wary paleontologist of Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" (1993), a performance of grounded decency amid the spectacle that helped anchor one of the most successful films ever made, [as NBC News noted](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/obituaries/sam-neill-actor-jurassic-park-dies-new-zealand-rcna587240). He returned to the character in "Jurassic Park III" in 2001 and again, decades on, in "Jurassic World Dominion" in 2022, introducing Grant to a new generation. Spielberg led the tributes, saying Neill would "never be forgotten by us or his many millions of fans."

## A far wider range

Yet to reduce him to the franchise is to miss the actor. In the same year as "Jurassic Park," Neill gave one of his finest performances as the cold, possessive husband in Jane Campion's "The Piano," opposite Holly Hunter. He was the doomed Soviet officer Vasili Borodin in "The Hunt for Red October" (1990), the menacing husband in the ocean thriller "Dead Calm," and later the imperious Inspector Chester Campbell in the first seasons of "Peaky Blinders." His long resume also took in "Reilly: Ace of Spies," the horror sequel "Omen III," and the New Zealand favorite "Hunt for the Wilderpeople," a body of work marked less by a single signature than by a reliable, unshowy intelligence.

## Ireland, then New Zealand

He was born Nigel John Dermot Neill on September 14, 1947, in Omagh, Northern Ireland, and moved with his family to New Zealand as a boy, coming to regard it as home. He adopted the name Sam in his school years. New Zealand remained his base throughout his career, and in 1993 he founded Two Paddocks, a vineyard in the Central Otago region that he built, by dint of the wine's quality rather than his fame, into a respected label.

## Remembered with affection

The warmth of the tributes spoke to how he was regarded by those who worked with him. His "Jurassic Park" co-star Laura Dern called him "my beloved lifetime friend," and Jeff Goldblum marked his passing with a line in keeping with the films: "The next great adventure begins." Neill was appointed a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2007; he initially declined a knighthood, once saying the idea of a title felt "just too grand," before later accepting the honor.

Off screen he cultivated a gentle, self-deprecating public persona, best known in his later years for the affectionate videos he posted of the ducks, pigs and chickens on his farm, many named after famous friends. It was of a piece with a career in which he seemed to prize the work, and the life around it, far more than the trappings of stardom. He is survived by his children and grandchildren.
