# Russia Kills at Least 14 in Kyiv as Ukraine's Air Defenses Fail to Stop Any Ballistic Missiles

A wave of Russian missiles and drones killed at least 14 people across Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight into Monday, the second deadly assault on the capital in a week. Ukraine's air force said none of the 29 ballistic missiles fired were shot down, blaming a shortage of interceptors that officials say Russia is deliberately exploiting.

Russia struck Kyiv in waves overnight into Monday, killing at least 14 people and wounding more than 60 in one of the deadliest attacks on the Ukrainian capital this year. Officials said 11 people were killed in the city itself and three more elsewhere in the surrounding region, with rescue crews still searching the rubble of residential buildings as the toll was described as provisional.

## The second deadly strike in a week

The bombardment was the second mass-casualty attack on Kyiv in a matter of days. A strike on July 2 killed at least 17 people, [NPR reported](https://www.npr.org/2026/07/02/g-s1-131681/russian-attack-ukraine), part of an intensifying campaign of long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities. Emergency services said high-rise apartment blocks were among the buildings hit overnight, and much of the casualty toll came from strikes on residential areas.

## None of the ballistic missiles stopped

The most alarming detail for Ukraine was defensive. The air force said Russia fired 29 ballistic missiles alongside hundreds of attack drones, and that not a single one of the ballistic missiles was intercepted, [according to Euronews](https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2026/07/06/ukraines-air-defences-failed-to-intercept-any-russian-ballistic-missiles-air-force-says). Ukrainian officials said the country simply does not have enough interceptor missiles for its Western-supplied systems, chiefly the US-made Patriot, to counter salvos of that size, and that Russia has learned to concentrate ballistic strikes to overwhelm what defenses remain.

## Zelensky presses allies

President Volodymyr Zelensky again appealed to Western governments for a steady supply of interceptors, warning that gaps in air defense are measured in lives. "Any delay with air defense means the loss of lives," he said, [as NPR reported](https://www.npr.org/2026/07/06/g-s1-132088/russian-missile-drone-attack-kyiv-kills-at-least-11), calling on allies to speed deliveries. Ukrainian officials have described a widening gap between how quickly Russia can produce and launch ballistic missiles and how fast Western industry can supply the interceptors needed to shoot them down.

The strain is not Ukraine's alone. Allied stocks of Patriot interceptors have been stretched by demands elsewhere, and Ukraine has been looking to alternatives, including European air-defense systems, to fill the gap. France has pledged additional SAMP/T batteries, and Ukrainian developers say they are testing lower-cost home-produced systems.

## Russia's stated rationale

Russia's Defense Ministry cast the bombardment as retaliation for Ukrainian long-range strikes on Russian military and energy targets. Kyiv has escalated attacks on fuel infrastructure and defense sites inside Russia this year, and Moscow has responded with repeated large-scale barrages against Ukrainian cities. Each side frames its strikes as a response to the other, but the pattern in Kyiv is now grimly familiar: waves of missiles and drones arriving faster than the capital's thinning defenses can stop them.
