# Rivian raises its 2026 delivery outlook as R2 sales begin

The electric-vehicle maker Rivian has raised its full-year delivery forecast after a stronger-than-expected second quarter that included the first deliveries of its cheaper R2 model. The upbeat update is a rare piece of good news for a company still working to prove it can make money.

Rivian, one of the highest-profile challengers trying to break into the electric-vehicle market, has lifted its outlook for the year after a second quarter that beat its own targets — helped by the arrival of the more affordable model it is betting its future on.

## A better-than-expected quarter

Rivian produced 12,613 vehicles and delivered 12,194 in the second quarter, [according to the company's filing](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1874178/000187417826000012/ex-9911q26deliveryproducti.htm) with US regulators. That comfortably topped its own guidance of 9,000 to 11,000 deliveries for the period.

The company credited the beat to solid demand for its existing R1 vehicles and its commercial delivery vans, together with the first deliveries of the R2 — a smaller, cheaper SUV meant to take Rivian into the mainstream of the market.

## Raising the forecast

On the strength of those results, Rivian raised its full-year 2026 delivery guidance to a range of 65,000 to 70,000 vehicles, up from a previous 62,000 to 70,000, signaling confidence that momentum will carry through the rest of the year. Investors welcomed the news, and the company's shares rose, [Investing.com reported](https://www.investing.com/analysis/rivian-pops-as-2026-delivery-outlook-resets-the-growth-narrative-200675004).

## Why the R2 matters

Rivian first made its name with premium, expensive vehicles — the R1T pickup and R1S SUV — that won admirers but sell in relatively modest numbers. The R2, a lower-priced model, is central to the company's plan to grow into a larger, self-sustaining carmaker rather than a niche one. Getting it into customers' hands, and doing so smoothly, is a milestone the company and its investors have watched closely.

Rivian has also been working to cut its costs, including by making more key components in-house, as it tries to turn years of heavy losses into sustainable profit — the central challenge for almost every EV start-up.

## A tough market

The upbeat update lands in a difficult environment for electric vehicles. Rivian competes not only with the market leader, Tesla, but with traditional automakers that have rolled out their own electric models, and the whole industry is sensitive to price and to shifts in US government incentives for EV buyers. Demand across the sector has been uneven, and several would-be rivals have struggled or failed.

Against that backdrop, a quarter that beat expectations and a raised forecast are a meaningful vote of confidence. They do not, on their own, settle the bigger question hanging over Rivian — whether it can reach the scale and profitability that have eluded most newcomers to the car business — but they suggest the company's push into the mainstream is, for now, gaining traction.
