# Pope Leo Visits Lampedusa With an Appeal to Protect Migrants

Pope Leo XIV traveled to the Italian island of Lampedusa, a front-line gateway for people crossing the Mediterranean, and called on Europe to receive and integrate migrants while honoring those who have died at sea. The July 4 visit deliberately echoed Pope Francis's first trip outside Rome in 2013, keeping migration at the center of the Vatican's public message.

Pope Leo XIV spent the Fourth of July on Lampedusa, the small Italian island closer to Tunisia than to the Italian mainland, using one of Europe's most symbolic migration sites to press his case for the protection of people who make the dangerous sea crossing.

## An appeal from the frontier

The pope called migration a "momentous challenge" for European societies and said Europe was "capable of addressing the crisis in this region in a comprehensive manner," [according to Al Jazeera](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/4/pope-urges-protection-integration-of-migrants-on-visit-to-island-frontier). He urged governments to "receive, protect, support and integrate migrants," while also calling for development in the countries people are fleeing, to address the causes of departure.

Addressing Americans on their national holiday, the pope tied the defense of human life to "welcoming, protecting and assisting immigrants." He described the deaths in the Mediterranean as the result of "choices made and unmade," a pointed reference to European policy.

## Acts of remembrance

The visit was built around commemoration. The pope prayed for migrants who have died at sea and visited the "Door of Europe," a monument by the Italian artist Mimmo Paladino dedicated to those who have risked their lives trying to reach the continent. He also blessed a plaque renaming a migrant-arrival pier after his predecessor, Pope Francis.

Italy's authorities recorded more than 14,000 migrant arrivals by sea in 2026 up to the visit, with more than half landing on Lampedusa, [Al Jazeera reported](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/7/4/pope-urges-protection-integration-of-migrants-on-visit-to-island-frontier). More than 1,400 people have died or gone missing while attempting the crossing this year.

## Following Francis

The choice of Lampedusa was freighted with history. In July 2013, Francis made the island the destination of his first trip outside Rome as pope, celebrating Mass at an altar built from the timbers of a migrant boat and denouncing what he called "the globalization of indifference," [as the National Catholic Reporter recounted](https://www.ncronline.org/vatican/vatican-news/10-years-later-pope-francis-lampedusa-cry-offers-renewed-call-welcome-migrants). That visit turned the island into a lasting reference point for the Church's advocacy on migration.

By returning there, Leo signaled continuity with his predecessor at a moment when migration remains politically divisive across Europe and the United States. Governments continue to disagree over how to share responsibility for arrivals, how tightly to police borders, and how to balance enforcement with asylum obligations, positions the Vatican has repeatedly weighed in on in favor of what it frames as the protection of human dignity.
