# Nolan's The Odyssey Opens to 124.5 Million in North America

Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer took an estimated $124.5 million in North America and $264.1 million worldwide, the best opening weekend of his career. More than half the domestic total came from premium large-format screens.

## The numbers, and what they measure

The worldwide figure surpasses the opening of *The Dark Knight Rises*, which had stood as Nolan's biggest since 2012. Domestically, the film ranks behind that earlier record: *The Dark Knight Rises* opened to roughly $160 million in North America.

It is the [third-largest domestic debut of 2026](https://variety.com/2026/film/box-office/the-odyssey-box-office-christopher-nolan-opening-weekend-shatters-expectations-1236815861/), behind the animated releases *Toy Story 5* at about $159 million and *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie* at about $131 million. Deadline reported the opening as [a career record for the film's star, Matt Damon](https://deadline.com/2026/07/box-office-the-odyssey-1236993792/).

All opening-weekend figures are studio estimates and are typically revised.

## Where the money came from

The most consequential detail for the industry is not the headline number but its composition. Premium large formats, meaning IMAX, other large-format screens and 70mm prints, accounted for [53 percent of the domestic total](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/the-odyssey-box-office-christopher-nolan-opening-success-1236651646/). IMAX alone took $51.8 million globally, around 23 percent of worldwide ticket sales.

That is an unusually high concentration. For most wide releases, premium formats contribute a modest share; here they carried the majority of domestic business.

The film was shot entirely with IMAX cameras, a first for a feature and a long-standing ambition of Nolan's. The distribution strategy and the production method were, in effect, the same decision.

## Why exhibitors are paying attention

Cinema operators have spent several years arguing that theatrical release retains value for films offering something a living room cannot. *The Odyssey* is a reasonably direct test of that argument: a three-hour adaptation of an ancient poem, carrying an R rating, opening without a franchise behind it.

The premium-format share suggests audiences did not simply choose to see the film, but chose to see it on the largest screens available, at higher ticket prices. For exhibitors who have invested heavily in large-format installations, that is the return they have been promising shareholders.

Whether the pattern generalises is another question. Nolan is one of a small number of directors whose name reliably sells a format as well as a film, and a single opening weekend, however large, does not settle the argument about theatrical economics.

The more useful measure will be the film's second and third weekends, which show whether an event opening converts into a sustained run.
