# Mexico beat Ecuador to reach the last 16, ending a 40-year World Cup knockout wait

Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 at the Estadio Azteca to reach the World Cup's last 16 — their first knockout-round victory in 40 years, since a win at the same stadium during the 1986 tournament.

Mexico ended one of their longest-running frustrations on home soil, beating Ecuador 2-0 at the Estadio Azteca to reach the round of 16 — and, in the process, recording their first World Cup knockout-round win in four decades.

## Two goals before the break

The hosts settled the match in the first half, scoring twice in the space of a few minutes. Julián Quiñones opened the scoring and Raúl Jiménez added the second, [ESPN reported](https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/49232657/mexico-ecuador-2026-world-cup-knockout-win), to give Mexico a two-goal cushion that Ecuador could not claw back. In front of a full and expectant Azteca crowd, El Tri controlled the game and saw it out without conceding.

## A 40-year wait

The victory carried a weight beyond the scoreline. Mexico had not won a match in the World Cup's knockout stage since 1986 — a drought that had come to define the national team's relationship with the tournament. That earlier win also came 2-0, at the Azteca, when Mexico beat Bulgaria during the World Cup they hosted. In the decades since, Mexico had reliably reached the knockout rounds only to exit at the first hurdle, a pattern that made this result a genuine release for players and fans alike.

## Built on a solid group stage

Mexico arrived in the knockout rounds in strong form, having come through the group stage with three wins and without conceding a goal. That defensive record, carried into the Ecuador match, underpinned a performance that was as controlled as it was clinical. For Ecuador, who had reached the knockout rounds themselves, the tournament ends here, undone by Mexico's fast start and unable to find a way back into the tie.

## Into the last 16

Mexico now advance to the round of 16, where they will meet the winner of another second-round match. As co-hosts of this expanded, 48-team World Cup — staged across North America — Mexico will continue to enjoy the backing of home crowds at venues including the Azteca, one of the sport's most storied grounds.

The challenge from here is to build on a night that lifted a long-standing burden. Reaching the last 16 is familiar territory; going further is what has eluded this team for a generation. For one night, though, the focus was simply on a barrier finally cleared — and on a stadium that has now seen Mexico win a World Cup knockout match twice, 40 years apart.
