# Manchester United buy Carlos Baleba for £70 million, their third midfielder of the summer

Brighton wanted $100m and got $95m. The Cameroon international is 22 and signs until 2031. United have now spent more than £150 million on midfielders since the season ended.

Manchester United have signed Carlos Baleba from Brighton and Hove Albion for £70 million, about $95m, on a contract to 2031 with the option of a further year, [Al Jazeera reports](https://www.aljazeera.com/sports/2026/8/25/carlos-baleba-joins-manchester-united-in-transfer-from-brighton). Brighton had asked for $100m.

Baleba is 22, from Douala in Cameroon. He turned professional at Lille in 2022, joined Brighton the following year, and made more than 100 appearances with 79 starts.

## The numbers behind the fee

In the 2024-25 season he was sixth among Premier League midfielders for tackles and interceptions combined, and fourth for progressive carries per 90 minutes across 31 league matches. He ranked in the top eight percent for defensive actions and the top one percent for second balls won.

That last statistic is the unusual one and probably the reason for the price. Second balls are the loose possessions after a clearance, header or block, and winning them is neither a defensive nor an attacking skill exactly; it is a measure of anticipation and of being willing to arrive first. It does not show up in highlights and it decides who has the ball for most of a match.

Taken together, the profile is a midfielder who both wins possession and carries it forward, which is the most expensive combination in the market.

United said Baleba "has already established himself as one of the most talented midfielders in the Premier League". He said: "Playing at Old Trafford is always special, but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour."

## Three midfielders, one summer

Baleba follows Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, taking United's midfield spending past £150 million, about $204m.

Buying three players for the same area of the pitch in one window is a statement about what the club thought was wrong, and also a problem to solve: a manager now has to decide which two of the three play, and the two who do have never played together before.
