# Kazakhstan's new governing party takes 71 percent, and all five winners back Tokayev

Adilet was founded this year and absorbed the party it replaced. Turnout was 74 percent. Four other parties entered the new 145-seat Kurultai, and all of them support the president, who says it is too early to say whether he will seek another term.

Adilet, a party founded earlier this year and led by aides to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, won more than 71 percent of the vote in Kazakhstan's parliamentary election on Sunday, [Al Jazeera reports](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/8/24/kazakhstans-newly-formed-pro-government-party-wins-parliamentary-election). Turnout was 74 percent, in a country of about 20 million people with roughly 12.6 million eligible voters.

Four other parties passed the threshold: Respublika and Ak Zhol, both pro-business; the centre-left Nationwide Social Democratic Party; and Auyl, which represents rural interests. All five are regarded as supportive of the president's administration.

## A new party that is not new

Adilet absorbed Amanat, the party that governed before it. That is the detail to hold onto when reading the 71 percent.

A newly formed party winning a landslide would ordinarily describe an upheaval. A newly formed party that has taken in the existing governing party, and is run by the president's own senior aides, describes something closer to a rebranding. The vote share is real; what it measures is continuity under a different name.

## What the parliament is

The election filled 145 seats in the Kurultai, a single-chamber legislature created by a constitution adopted earlier this year, replacing the previous two-chamber parliament.

Constitutional resets of this kind do two things at once. They genuinely change how a state works, and they reset the clocks attached to the old arrangements. Both can be true, and voters weighing the result are entitled to consider both.

## The succession question

Tokayev said it is too early to say whether he would seek another term, and that he would name a vice president within the next seven to 10 days.

The second half of that is the more consequential. Creating and filling a vice presidency establishes a designated successor, and who is appointed will say more about Kazakhstan's next decade than the seat distribution announced on Sunday.
