# Karlovy Vary Spotlights Europe's Next Filmmakers Through Future Frames

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is again handing its spotlight to newcomers, presenting ten emerging European directors through its Future Frames program. The showcase gives film-school graduates a short cut to the producers, agents and distributors who can turn a first film into a career.

At most film festivals, the biggest names get the brightest lights. The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, held each summer in the Czech spa town, makes a point of turning some of that attention the other way, toward directors who have barely started out. Its Future Frames program this year presents ten emerging filmmakers from across Europe, introducing them and their short films to the festival's audiences and, more importantly, to its industry guests.

## What Future Frames does

Future Frames is run by the festival together with [European Film Promotion](https://efp-online.com/programs/future-frames), the network of national film bodies, with support from the European Union's Creative Europe MEDIA program and Allwyn as its main partner. Each participating country's film-promotion institute nominates candidates, and the festival's programming team, led by artistic director Karel Och, makes the final selection of recent graduates and students whose short work has already won notice.

The directors and their films are presented to Karlovy Vary audiences on July 6 and 7. Greek filmmaker Christos Nikou, known for the features "Apples" and "Fingernails," mentors this year's group. Beyond the screenings, the program offers concrete next steps, including a residency in Los Angeles for one selected filmmaker and a place in the talent program of France's Les Arcs Film Festival later in the year, the kind of access that is often harder to win than praise.

## This year's ten

The 2026 selection spans the continent, from the Adriatic to the Alps. It includes Jozo Schmuch of Croatia ("Shallow Ground"), Marie Lukáčová of the Czech Republic ("Orla"), Helmi Donner of Finland ("The Lightning Rod"), Teilo Quillard of France ("Zampano") and Arnas Balčiūnas of Lithuania ("Past the Hill of Napoleon's Hat").

They are joined by Ollie Launspach of the Netherlands ("kiss kiss bang bang"), David Champaigne of Slovenia ("Self-Sown"), Júlia Coldwell Serra of Spain ("Nobody Barks"), André Vaara of Sweden ("Sister of Mine") and Hae-Sup Sin of Switzerland ("Ban Dal"). The films range widely in style and subject, from eco-minded fable to stories of memory, family and identity, united less by theme than by the ambition of directors testing what they can do in short form.

## Why it matters

Festival selection alone rarely launches a career; what follows it usually matters more. By pairing a public showcase with mentorship and introductions to agents and producers, Future Frames tries to bridge the gap between a promising graduation film and a working life in the industry. For a European film sector competing for attention and talent, the program is also a bet on its own pipeline, a way of making sure the next generation of directors is seen while their work is still fresh and their options still open.
