# Iran Says It Struck US Bases in Retaliation, Sirens Sound in Gulf States

Iran said its forces launched retaliatory missile and drone strikes on US military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait, hours after American strikes on Iran's southern coast. Air-raid sirens sounded in both Gulf states, where authorities reported interceptions. Casualties and damage were not independently confirmed, and the situation was developing.

Iran said early Wednesday that its forces had launched retaliatory strikes on United States military sites in the Gulf, hours after American forces bombed targets along Iran's southern coast. Iran's Revolutionary Guard described the operation as an "initial response," and air-raid sirens sounded across Bahrain and Kuwait. Casualties and the extent of any damage could not be independently confirmed, and officials on both sides were still assessing the situation.

## What Iran says it did

The Revolutionary Guard said it had carried out a joint missile and drone operation aimed at US installations in the region, including the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and an air base in Kuwait. Iranian statements put the number of targeted sites at 85, a figure that could not be verified and that US officials had not publicly addressed. Newsparlor was not able to confirm what was struck or with what effect.

## Sirens and interceptions in the Gulf

Authorities in Kuwait said the country's air defenses had responded to incoming missiles and drones and that explosions heard across the country were the result of interceptions, reporting no immediate damage. In Bahrain, officials urged residents to stay calm and move to safe areas. As of early Wednesday there were no confirmed casualties from the claimed strikes, and damage assessments remained incomplete, [Al Jazeera reported](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2026/7/8/iran-war-live-us-bombs-sirik-qeshm-bandar-abbas-over-hormuz-attacks).

## The strikes that preceded it

Iran's announcement came after US Central Command said American forces had carried out strikes on Iran's southern coast, hitting sites near the ports of Bandar Abbas and Sirik and on Qeshm Island. US officials said the targets included air-defense systems, radar and command sites, anti-ship missiles and dozens of Revolutionary Guard fast boats near the Strait of Hormuz, [CNBC reported](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/07/us-strikes-iran-hormuz-ships.html). Washington cast those strikes as a response to attacks on three commercial vessels in the strait a day earlier, in which a Qatari-owned gas carrier and a Saudi-flagged tanker were damaged; no casualties were reported on the ships, [according to NPR](https://www.npr.org/2026/07/07/g-s1-132265/tanker-attack-strait-of-hormuz).

## A collapsing truce

Both governments accused the other of violating a memorandum agreed in late June that had briefly quieted the wider 2026 conflict. Iran's foreign ministry called the US strikes a serious breach and warned of further measures; US Central Command called Iran's attacks a dangerous violation of the ceasefire. The exchanges marked one of the sharpest escalations since the fighting began earlier in the year, with the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for a large share of the world's seaborne oil, again at the center of it. The situation was fluid, and key claims from both sides remained unverified.
