# Gauff survives a Wimbledon scare against Sierra, seven years after her Venus moment

Coco Gauff came from the brink to beat Solana Sierra 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7) and reach the third round at Wimbledon, saving the match in a tense final-set tiebreak. The win came exactly seven years after her breakthrough at the same tournament, when as a 15-year-old she stunned Venus Williams.

Coco Gauff does not always win prettily, but she wins. At Wimbledon on Wednesday, the American had to dig herself out of trouble against the Argentine Solana Sierra, coming through 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7) in a match that swung one way and then the other before she edged a nerve-shredding final-set tiebreak.

## A match that got away — and came back

Gauff took the opening set comfortably enough, but Sierra, unburdened by expectation, grew into the contest and levelled it by taking the second. The decider became a test of nerve as much as tennis, and it was Sierra who looked the more likely: she pushed ahead in the closing tiebreak and moved within sight of one of the biggest wins of her career.

Then Gauff steadied. Trailing 7-4 in the tiebreak, she reeled off the points she needed to turn it around and close out the set 9-7, [ESPN reported](https://www.espn.com/tennis/story/_/id/49238434/gauff-overcomes-sierra-reach-3rd-round-wimbledon). The turnaround, over a match that ran to more than two hours, was a reminder of the competitive stubbornness that has become one of her defining traits.

## Echoes of 2019

The victory carried an unmistakable resonance, because Wednesday marked seven years to the day since the moment that made Gauff's name. On July 1, 2019, a 15-year-old Gauff, playing in the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time, beat the five-time champion Venus Williams at Wimbledon — an upset that turned an unknown teenager into an overnight sensation.

Returning to the same grass all these years later stirred the memory. "Every time I walk down this hallway, I get déjà vu," Gauff said, [as quoted by the WTA](https://www.wtatennis.com/news/4529459/gauff-escapes-sierra-in-third-set-tiebreak-thriller-at-wimbledon), adding that she reminds herself that if she could win as a girl of 15, "I'm definitely a better player since then." She has spoken of that 2019 match as something almost sacred — a memory she has preferred not to revisit on tape.

## What comes next

Gauff's reward is a third-round meeting with a fellow American, the qualifier Claire Liu. Beyond that, the draw offers a route deeper into the second week, but as Wednesday showed, Gauff is not taking anything for granted.

For all the nostalgia, her focus is firmly on the present — and on the fact that, seven years after she first announced herself at the All England Club, she is once again winning matches on the days her best tennis will not come.
