# Ecuador Beat Germany 2-1 to Reach the World Cup Knockout Rounds

Gonzalo Plata's late strike gave Ecuador a 2-1 win over Germany at MetLife Stadium, sending the South Americans into the World Cup knockout stage. Germany, already qualified, still finished top of Group E despite the defeat.

Ecuador produced one of the group stage's more eye-catching results at the 2026 World Cup on Wednesday, beating Germany 2-1 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to book a place in the knockout rounds.

## A quick response

Germany pushed for an equalizer late on but could not break through, and Ecuador held on for a 2-1 victory.

## What it means

The result mattered more for Ecuador than for Germany.
