# Ecuador Beat Germany 2-1 to Reach the World Cup Knockout Rounds

Gonzalo Plata's late strike gave Ecuador a 2-1 win over Germany at MetLife Stadium, sending the South Americans into the World Cup knockout stage. Germany, already qualified, still finished top of Group E despite the defeat.

Ecuador produced one of the group stage's more eye-catching results at the 2026 World Cup on Wednesday, beating Germany 2-1 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to book a place in the knockout rounds.

## A quick response

Germany made the perfect start when Leroy Sané finished off a Florian Wirtz pass inside the opening minutes, [ESPN reported](https://www.espn.com/soccer/match/_/gameId/760468/germany-ecuador). But Ecuador hit back almost immediately: Nilson Angulo curled a low effort into the far corner from the edge of the box to level the match before 10 minutes had been played.

The game then tightened, with Germany controlling possession but unable to find a second goal against a compact Ecuadorian side.

## Plata settles it

The decisive moment came in the second half, when Gonzalo Plata turned in the winner from close range after a substitute's pass, [amNewYork reported](https://www.amny.com/sports/world-cup-ecuador-germay-6-25-26/). Germany pushed for an equalizer late on but could not break through, and Ecuador held on for a 2-1 victory.

## What it means

The result mattered more for Ecuador than for Germany. Both teams advanced from Group E, but the standings gave the night its shape: Germany, who had won their opening two matches, finished top of the group on six points even in defeat, [according to the group table](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_FIFA_World_Cup_Group_E). Ecuador's win lifted them to four points and into the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams in the expanded 48-nation tournament.

For Ecuador, reaching the last 32 is a notable achievement, and doing so by beating one of the sport's most decorated nations gave the milestone extra weight. Germany, meanwhile, advance to the knockout rounds but will face questions about their defending after conceding again — part of a run of recent World Cup matches in which they have not kept a clean sheet.

The expanded format, which sends the best third-placed teams through, has widened the path to the knockout stage — and on this evidence, made the final round of group games anything but a formality.
