# Clive Davis, the music mogul who shaped modern pop, dies at 94

Clive Davis, the record executive whose ear for talent helped launch the careers of Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen, Janis Joplin and Alicia Keys across six decades, has died at his home in New York at the age of 94, his family said.

Clive Davis, one of the most influential record executives of the modern era, died on Monday at his home in New York City at the age of 94, according to statements relayed by his family and reported by multiple outlets.

Davis built a reputation over roughly 60 years as an instinctive judge of popular taste. His family described him as a figure "whose vision, instincts, and relentless pursuit of excellence shaped the soundtrack of countless lives," as quoted by [CBS News](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/clive-davis-dies-age-94-music-executive/), which reported the cause as an age-related illness.

## A lawyer who found his ear at Monterey

Born in Brooklyn in 1932, Davis lost both parents as a teenager and went on to graduate from New York University and Harvard Law School, according to [CBS News](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/clive-davis-dies-age-94-music-executive/) and [NBC News](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/obituaries/clive-davis-legendary-music-mogul-discovered-whitney-houston-dies-94-rcna351181). He joined Columbia Records as a lawyer and rose to become its president in 1967.

Davis often credited a single event with transforming his career: attending the Monterey Pop Festival in the late 1960s, where Janis Joplin's performance convinced him to steer Columbia toward rock music. [Rolling Stone](https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/clive-davis-arista-dead-obituary-203584/) described the festival as the turning point that redirected his — and the label's — direction. In the years that followed he signed or championed Springsteen, Santana, Aerosmith, Billy Joel and Simon & Garfunkel, among others.

## Arista, J Records and a second act

Davis left Columbia in 1973 and founded Arista Records soon after, building a roster that spanned Barry Manilow, Aretha Franklin and, most consequentially, Whitney Houston, whom he signed in the early 1980s and guided to global stardom.

In 2000 he launched J Records, later overseeing the early careers of Alicia Keys and Kelly Clarkson, before taking senior creative roles at RCA Music Group and serving as chief creative officer at Sony Music Entertainment, according to CBS News and Rolling Stone. His annual pre-Grammy gala became one of the music industry's most prominent gatherings.

## A lasting mark

Davis was a multiple Grammy winner and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer in 2000, according to CBS News. A representative said he "passed away peacefully" surrounded by family.

In their statement, his family said he "discovered, mentored, and championed the greatest artists in modern music history, leaving an indelible mark on culture that will endure for generations." That reach — from Joplin and Springsteen through Houston to a generation of pop stars who followed — is the measure of a career that spanned the better part of the recording era itself.
