The elimination came in a crowded playoff for the last places in the knockout stage.

According to ESPN, Woods finished the two rounds of stroke play tied for 63rd at Saucon Valley in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on a total of five over par (76 and 70), which left him in a 14-player playoff for the two remaining spots in match play. On the first playoff hole, a par five, he hit his second shot into the rough near the green. Then, on his third shot, the sound of a camera clicking distracted him mid-swing and he flubbed it. He made a bogey and was eliminated.

His reaction was audible and understandable. "Really, dude? I mean, come on," he said, according to ESPN. Two other players, Eli Wessel and Hudson Kutchma, advanced by making pars on the next playoff hole.

## The context, and a note of proportion

It is worth being honest about why this small moment became a story at all.

ESPN notes the obvious: Charlie Woods draws media attention because of who his father is, and a camera clicking near a competitor is the kind of thing that would pass unremarked for almost any other junior golfer. The one figure worth noting from the wider event, as a reminder of the level, is that Miles Russell, who ESPN reports will be a college teammate of Woods at Florida State, was a co-medalist in the stroke-play qualifying at six under par. That is the standard of play at the top of this field.
