# Bill Maher takes the Mark Twain Prize at a changed Kennedy Center

Bill Maher, the provocative comedian and longtime HBO host, received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center on Sunday — an award handed out this year against the backdrop of a turbulent period at the institution and Maher's own hard-to-pin-down place in America's culture wars.

Bill Maher was honored as the 27th recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at a Kennedy Center gala in Washington on Sunday, [CNN reported](https://edition.cnn.com/2026/06/28/politics/bill-maher-mark-twain-award-kennedy-center) — a celebration shadowed, as much of American cultural life now is, by politics.

## The night

A roster of comedians and friends turned out to roast and toast Maher, among them Louis C.K., Whitney Cummings, Woody Harrelson, Jay Leno, John Mellencamp, Arianna Huffington and Stephen A. Smith, [as the Kennedy Center announced](https://www.kennedy-center.org/news-room/press-release-landing-page/bill-maher-27-mark-twain-prize/). Much of the evening's comedy revolved around President Trump; at one point the impressionist Matt Friend, playing the president, "interrupted" Maher's acceptance. The ceremony is due to stream on Netflix on July 21.

## What the prize is

The Mark Twain Prize is the Kennedy Center's lifetime-achievement award for humor, given since 1998, when Richard Pryor was its first recipient. Past honorees span generations of American comedy — Carol Burnett, Tina Fey and, last year, Conan O'Brien among them. (The 1998 award to Bill Cosby was rescinded in 2018 after his sexual-assault conviction.) It is regarded as one of the most prestigious honors in the field.

## A complicated figure

Maher, the host of HBO's *Real Time*, has built a long career on provocation. He describes himself as a liberal, but is just as known for attacking what he sees as the excesses of the left as those of the right, and he has at times found common ground with figures across the divide — including a 2025 meeting with Trump. That positioning has made him a lightning rod, admired and criticized from several directions at once, which is part of what made the choice of honoree notable.

## A fraught backdrop

The award also lands at a charged moment for the Kennedy Center itself. The institution went through a significant shake-up in 2025, when President Trump moved to reshape its leadership and board — a change that has drawn both support and sharp criticism in the arts world. Maher's selection had been the subject of earlier back-and-forth: when reports first circulated about the prize, the White House publicly disputed them, [as CNN noted in its coverage](https://www.cnn.com/2026/03/26/politics/bill-maher-mark-twain-prize-kennedy-center). That a prominent Trump critic ultimately accepted the center's top comedy honor, at a ceremony full of jokes at the president's expense, only underscored how closely the worlds of comedy and politics are now intertwined.
