# Apple Raises MacBook and iPad Prices, Citing a Memory-Chip Crunch

Apple has raised prices across its Mac and iPad lines, blaming a sharp jump in memory-chip costs driven by surging demand for artificial-intelligence hardware. The iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods were left unchanged — for now.

Apple has pushed up the prices of its Mac computers and iPads, an unusual mid-cycle increase that the company attributes to a steep rise in the cost of memory chips. The iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods lines were spared.

## What changed

The increases span the Mac and iPad ranges, with rises of a few hundred dollars on many models, [9to5Mac reported](https://9to5mac.com/2026/06/25/apple-price-increases-mac-ipad-more/). The entry MacBook Air rose by about $200, the 14-inch MacBook Pro by roughly $300, and the standard iPad and iPad Air by $100 to $200 depending on the model, with higher-end Mac configurations rising more. Desktop Macs and some home devices were also affected, while the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods were left at their current prices.

## Apple's explanation

Apple framed the move as forced by component costs. "We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly," the company said in a statement, adding that it had absorbed the costs until now. Chief executive Tim Cook had warned investors earlier in the year that memory prices would weigh on the business, [Bloomberg reported](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-06-25/apple-raises-mac-and-ipad-prices-to-counter-memory-shortages).

The main pressure is on DRAM, the working memory built into every Mac and iPad. Prices for it have spiked in 2026, and analysts expect further increases. Apple also faces added costs from trade tariffs, which Cook has said run into the hundreds of millions of dollars per quarter, [according to CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/06/25/apple-macbook-ipad-price-hike-memory.html). Those tariff figures are Apple's own estimates.

## Why memory is so expensive

The squeeze traces back to artificial intelligence. The race to build AI data centers has sent demand soaring for the high-bandwidth memory used in AI accelerators, and the handful of big memory manufacturers — Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron — have shifted production toward those higher-margin enterprise chips. That has tightened supply of the consumer-grade memory that goes into laptops, tablets and phones, pushing prices up across the industry. Analysts have warned the imbalance could persist for a couple of years before new capacity catches up.

## What it means for buyers and rivals

For consumers, the increases land on products that had held steady prices for roughly two years, raising the cost of a new Mac or iPad noticeably. Apple's stock saw only a muted reaction, with analysts noting the rises had been widely expected.

The bigger question is whether the rest of the industry follows. Apple's brand strength and tight hardware-software integration generally leave it better placed than competitors to pass on costs without losing customers; analysts have cautioned that other PC and device makers, with thinner margins, may have to raise prices by even more. Apple signaled that further adjustments — potentially including other products — could come if component costs keep climbing.
