# A Giant Object Orbiting a Failed Star Blurs the Line Between Moon and Planet

Astronomers have found a body nearly as massive as Jupiter circling a 'failed star' 73 light-years away. Astronomers have detected a huge object orbiting a distant "failed star," and its size raises a surprisingly basic question: what, exactly, is a moon? [Scientific American reports](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/a-huge-cosmic-object-could-force-astronomers-to-rethink-what-a-moon-is/) that the body is nearly as massive as Jupiter, which makes it far too large to fit our usual idea of a moon.

## What was found

The discovery is of a companion to a small, dim object, and the numbers are what make it strange.

According to Scientific American, the body orbits a brown dwarf called CD-35 2722 B, about 73 light-years away, completing one orbit every 170 days. Its minimum mass is around 90 percent of Jupiter's, and possibly more. For comparison, the moons we know, including the large moons of Jupiter and Saturn, are a tiny fraction of their planet's mass. An object nine-tenths the mass of Jupiter is not moon-like at all in scale; it is planet-sized.

## Why it is hard to classify

The problem is not the object itself but the thing it orbits.

A brown dwarf is often called a "failed star": it forms like a star but never gains enough mass to ignite sustained nuclear fusion in its core, so it glows only dimly. That leaves this newly found body in an awkward gap. If it circled an ordinary star, Scientific American notes, astronomers would simply call it an exoplanet. Because it circles a brown dwarf rather than a true star, and because it is far too massive to sit comfortably in the "moon" category, it does not fit neatly into either box. The discovery, in other words, exposes how fuzzy the boundary between these categories really is.

## How they saw it

Detecting something that gives off no light of its own, around an object that is itself faint, takes an indirect method.

Scientific American reports that Kevin Hoy, a PhD student at the Institute of Astrophysical Studies in Santiago, Chile, and colleagues used the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope, fitted with the CRIRES+ spectrograph, over nearly two and a half years ending in February 2026. They used a technique called radial velocity, which looks for the tiny gravitational "wobble" a companion induces in the object it orbits, detectable as a rhythmic shift in the light. That wobble revealed the hidden body. An outside expert, David Kipping of Columbia University, told Scientific American the detection appears "more secure" than similar candidates, calling it "a really clean detection." The findings were published in the journal *Nature* on July 22.

## Why a naming problem matters

It is tempting to dismiss this as a squabble over labels, but the categories carry real meaning.

How astronomers classify an object shapes how they think it formed. Moons generally form from the disk of debris around a planet, or are captured; planets form from the disk around a star. A Jupiter-mass body orbiting a brown dwarf may have formed in a way that fits neither tidy story, which is why a clean example like this one is scientifically useful rather than merely confusing. The universe, as it often does, has produced something that does not respect the boxes we made for it, and the interesting work is figuring out what that tells us about how such systems come to be. For now, there is a near-Jupiter circling a failed star, and a definition that may need to widen to hold it.
